Job Purpose

This position is a newly created position, leading a Platform established to support IRRI’s research through full-cost recovery services including analytical laboratory services, internal labor resources, the Zeigler Experiment Station, seed processing and storage, phenotyping services, and research equipment services, as well as infrastructure development and operations solutions, Seed Health Unit, bioinformatics and ICT tool programming.

In addition to being a recognized international expert in an area of research support, the successful applicant will have the leadership experience, standing and personal qualities required to provide inspirational leadership to a diverse team of scientists, researchers and research service providers

Reporting to the Deputy Director General for Research, the Platform Leader will :

  • Be responsible for the ongoing development, articulation and execution of the Platform, strategic and operational plans, and for the development and functioning of the Platform leadership team
  • Develop, implement and improve the service, support, data management and communication systems within the Platform
  • In collaboration with Research Platforms and Outcome Themes, lead the Integrative Research Support team in exploring and cultivating innovative ideas in the delivery of research services, facilities and functions across the global IRRI network
  • Work in close collaboration with IRRI Leadership, other Platform Leaders, Regional Representatives and IRRI Education to assure cross-
  • Platform contributions to IRRI’s research for development and education and capacity building programs;
  • Cultivate a culture of excellence within Integrative Research Support in the delivery of high value research services and support across the global IRRI network, acting as a mentor, coach and leader for staff in the Platform
  • Be responsible for ensuring scientific credibility and capacity within the Clusters, overseeing the recruitment, management and development of Platform staff;
  • and ensuring access to key research materials, systems and technologies across the global IRRI network; and

  • Promote and model collaborative relationships amongst IRRI staff and existing external partners while forming new alliances with future partners, vendors and donors / investors.
  • This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines.

    Roles and Responsibilities


  • Lead multidisciplinary and cross-functional groups that empower Platforms and Research Clusters with high quality and high value research services, facilities, functions, technologies and support mechanisms
  • Contribute collaboratively to the Institute-wide research management team reporting to the Deputy Director General for Research in order to ensure cross-
  • disciplinary, cross site, and cross functional collaboration across the global IRRI network.

  • Work as part of a team to bring in new resources to support IRRI’s research for development objectives
  • Develop a coordinated and effective Platform that delivers excellent service at minimum costs with modern technologies and methodologies, with international standards of OH&S and operational efficiency
  • Engagement

  • As a member of the IRRI Senior Leadership team the Platform Leader will work with the other Platform Leaders and Executive Team to ensure that the needs of Research are clearly articulated and delivered
  • Coordinate with IRRI’s Executive Team, through the DDG-R, in the execution of the Platform, Research Cluster and Outcome Theme goals and priorities
  • Represent IRRI in research fora, local and international conferences to sustain and develop working relationship with new target investors, donors, government partners, communities and private institutions.
  • Advocate IRRI’s research for development in international research fora to enhance the IRRI’s brand across different regions
  • Contribute to fulfilling IRRI’s obligations to engage with CGIAR Research Programs, Platforms and Communities of Practice as determined by the DDG-R
  • Engage with the scientific community internally across the global network of IRRI, and externally, and with private sector and other stakeholders to ensure that the delivery technologies and practices within the Platform keep IRRI at the forefront of research and scientific excellence
  • Ensure the Platform is effectively engaged and integrated across the global network of IRRI in the delivery of relevant, high quality and efficient research services, facilities, functions and technologies
  • Across the global network of IRRI, work closely with the Regional Hubs and Country Offices, to ensure the provision of skills, knowledge, service, and technologies, provided and maintained by Integrative Research Support are available and effective in meeting research needs across the global IRRI network
  • Delivery

  • A coordinated and efficient Platform that provides excellent service and support at minimum cost to the research platforms, themes and clusters within IRRI, and to partners and other stakeholders as required, across the global IRRI network
  • Lead improvements in the development and delivery of integrated research services, facilities, technologies and data management systems across the global IRRI network, to ensure the research and capacity building efforts of IRRI meet and exceed the expectations of donor / investors and other partners and stakeholders
  • Harness the synergy and nurture the creativity of individual staff, multidisciplinary and cross functional clusters to ensure the quality and continuous growth of human resources and to build high performing teams
  • Manage, develop and monitor the performance of Cluster Leaders to ensure the quality and continuous growth of human resources to build high performing team
  • Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering or other fields relevant to the position
  • At least 10 years of managerial, service provision / operations experience in a large industrial, scientific or educational complex
  • Significant multicultural and multidisciplinary management experience
