JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS :
The Department of Humanities at Penn State College of Medicine seeks to hire a Humanities Postdoctoral Scholar, to begin July 1, 2020.
The purpose of the Humanities Postdoctoral Scholar initiative is to offer humanities and social science scholars an opportunity to participate in research and teaching in an academic medical center and college of medicine, specifically to prepare them to be more competitive for faculty positions in these contexts.
The Department of Humanities is the oldest such department in a college of medicine in the United States. The department consists of 10 primary and over 25 joint faculty members.
Clinical and nonclinical primary faculty members have backgrounds in anthropology, literature, pedagogy, clinical medicine, philosophy, ethics, cultural studies, women’s and gender studies, psychology, and nursing.
Department members run the Clinical Ethics Consultation Service, the Research Ethics Consultation Service, and the Hospital Ethics Committee, and reach into the health-care setting to improve patient and provider experience with programs focusing on compassion and empathy, often utilizing arts and music.
The department houses Center Stage Arts in Health and the Doctors Kienle Center for Humanistic Medicine. Affiliated programs offer global health opportunities.
The Department of Humanities manages an extensive undergraduate medical curriculum with one of the highest number of required hours in the U.
S. Teaching encompasses medical, physician assistant, and graduate students, with currently limited teaching of residents.
Alzheimer’s and dementia care; professional identity formation; and race and social justice within medicine and biomedical research, among other topics.
