JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS :

The Department of Humanities at Penn State College of Medicine seeks to hire a Humanities Postdoctoral Scholar, to begin July 1, 2020.

The purpose of the Humanities Postdoctoral Scholar initiative is to offer humanities and social science scholars an opportunity to participate in research and teaching in an academic medical center and college of medicine, specifically to prepare them to be more competitive for faculty positions in these contexts.

The Department of Humanities is the oldest such department in a college of medicine in the United States. The department consists of 10 primary and over 25 joint faculty members.

Clinical and nonclinical primary faculty members have backgrounds in anthropology, literature, pedagogy, clinical medicine, philosophy, ethics, cultural studies, women’s and gender studies, psychology, and nursing.

Department members run the Clinical Ethics Consultation Service, the Research Ethics Consultation Service, and the Hospital Ethics Committee, and reach into the health-care setting to improve patient and provider experience with programs focusing on compassion and empathy, often utilizing arts and music.

The department houses Center Stage Arts in Health and the Doctors Kienle Center for Humanistic Medicine. Affiliated programs offer global health opportunities.

The Department of Humanities manages an extensive undergraduate medical curriculum with one of the highest number of required hours in the U.

S. Teaching encompasses medical, physician assistant, and graduate students, with currently limited teaching of residents.

  • Faculty pursue innovative research in graphic medicine; vaccination controversy; child protection; end-of-life decision making;
  • ethical, legal and social implications of genomic research; trust and institutional betrayal; nursing and nurse relationships;
  • Alzheimer’s and dementia care; professional identity formation; and race and social justice within medicine and biomedical research, among other topics.

    The Humanities Postdoctoral Scholar supports :

  • the development of curricular initiatives for a variety of learners in academic medicine, particularly nascent humanities efforts in graduate medical education (residency).
  • In addition, the postdoctoral scholar will support :

  • existing research projects in the department,
  • conduct their own research,
  • and participate in the life of the department and the college, including limited service on committees.
  • The specific job duties of the Humanities Postdoctoral Scholar will depend on the appointee’s interests and skills, as well as career goals, in the context of departmental needs.

    Required qualifications :

  • Doctoral or equivalent scholarly terminal degree in the humanities or social sciences.
  • Demonstrated scholarly interest in medicine.
  • Active program in scholarship and research.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Preferred qualifications :

  • Experience with curriculum development.
  • Experience with adult learners.
  • Appointment terms : One year, with the opportunity of renewal. Full-time, with benefits. Salary aligns with 2020 NRSA rates.
