The office of The Jake Laboratories for Cancer Research at the Penn State College of Medicine is a research administration unit providing support for 7 PhD and MD / PhD cancer researchers, 40 + / - staff and laboratories.

We are looking for a dynamic Grants and Awards Generalist to assist the researchers in their grant submissions. This position will report to the Administrative Coordinator in a complex, detailed, multifaceted and unique environment.

The selected individual’s job responsibilities will include but are not limited to :

  • reviewing, analyzing, and processing proposals, contracts, and grants from various federal, state, local agencies and private corporations and foundations;
  • this includes the preparation of budgets, collection of all materials needed for grant submission from many sources;
  • keeping track of and enforcing grant submission deadlines;
  • and advising faculty and staff in interpreting and adhering to sponsor and University guidelines and regulations;
  • the candidate will be responsible for preparing and submitting all continuation grants;
  • the selected candidate will aid the Financial Assistant with post-award processes;
  • Typical office duties of answering phones, mail, helping all who come through our door are also a part of this position.
  • This job will be filled as a level 1, or level 2, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience.

    Typically requires :

  • a High School diploma or higher
  • plus three years of related experience,
  • or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1.
  • Additional experience and / or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.

    Must have :

  • excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills;
  • who is capable of working both independently and as a team player;
  • attention to detail;
  • the ability to multitask;
  • and respond professionally in challenging situations is essential.
  • Training and support from the Gittlen Lab office and the Office of Research Affairs are available to instruct and guide this candidate to be a successful employee.

    Understanding finances as well as experience with MS Office is required. Some knowledge of our financial system Integrated Business Information System (IBIS), and our grants submission systems, Strategic Information Management System (SIMS) and Cayuse are a plus.

    Enrolled in, or a graduate of, Penn State ACES is a plus.

    This is a fixed term appointment funded one year from date of hire with the possibility of refunding.


    Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and the Pennsylvania Act of 1988, Penn State publishes a combined Annual Security and Annual Fire Safety Report (ASR).

    The ASR includes crime statistics and institutional policies concerning campus security, such as those concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters.
