Performs cassette-log reconciliation. Initiatesappropriate programs on conventional and microwave tissue processors. Recognizes,resolves, and documents standard processor alarms.

Embeds biopsy, routinesurgical, and autopsy tissues per SOP. Recognizes adequacy ofprocessing. Identifies and orients tissues correctly.

Documentstracking and quality issues on embedding log. Performs and documents routineparaffin block reconciliation. Prioritizes blocks based on establishedguidelines.

Operates microtome per SOP. Determines appropriate blockorientation and alignment, knife angles, and settings to obtain representativesections.

Recognizes acceptable vs. unacceptable sections; evaluatesinstances in which specific tissue might require a deviation from standardprocedures to insure diagnostic sections are produced.

Documents blockscut in laboratory information system. Operates automated instrumentation tostain and coverslip microscopic slides.

Performs manual methods duringinstrument downtimes. Recognizes, resolves, and documents unacceptablestaining and coverslipping results and / or instrument failure.

Labels slides,collates with paperwork, and submits to appropriate pathologist orresident. Documents appropriate tracking information.

Performs specialstaining techniques using automated instrumentation and manual methods.Identifies appropriate positive and / or negative controls.

Evaluates stainsmicroscopically for acceptable results. Identifies and corrects stainingdeficiencies. Documents stains and quality issues.

Performs and / orassists with gross examination, dissection, and selection of representativetissue for microscopic examination for designated specimens.

Verifiesthat specimen and requisition labeling match prior to examination. Resolves discrepancies prior to gross examination and escalate to supervisorwhen necessary.

Utilizes dictation equipment to document description perprocedure. Verifies specimen identify matches cassette identity prior tosubmission of tissues.

Documents cassettes and tissues accurately andlegibly on logs and in LIS. Maintains specimen integrity and accurate legiblespecimen identification throughout all technical and clerical processes.

Records all documentation consistently and legibly. Maintains manual andelectronic records for easy retrieval of data as necessary.

Investigates,escalates, and documents any discrepancies or unresolved issues appropriately.Prioritizes technical workload based on assignment or established priorities,responds effectively to changes in workflow adjusting work to incorporate STATrequests or fluctuations in work volume.

Exercises independent judgment in theperformance of technical responsibilities. Practices the proficient andsafe use of all equipment necessary for the completion of all duties andresponsibilities within defined turn-

around times. Performs required QualitySystem responsibilities including initiating Quality Investigation Reports.Cleans, disinfects, performs, and documents routine equipment and instrumentper SOP.

Reports equipment or instrument malfunctionsappropriately. Maintains a clean and safe work environment to ensure efficientworkflow and compliance with all regulatory requirements.

Cleans anddisinfects laboratory areas per SOP. Performs minor spill cleanup per SOPwhen necessary. Monitors laboratory inventory to ensure supply levels are appropriateand adequate.

Notifies coordinator promptly of any supply issues. Fostersdepartment and laboratory teamwork through effective communication.

Participates in Safety and Infection Control activities. Follows all requiredsafety procedures, assumes a proactive role in laboratory safety.

Takesinitiative for personal development by attending teleconferences, educationalsessions, and required meetings, etc. Additional Functions : Performs otherduties as assigned.

Assists in specific process improvement projects. Willassist with problem resolution regarding patient specimens including root causeanalysis.

EOE including Disabled and Veterans.

Required : B.S. degree in the biological, lifesciences, medical laboratory technology, or other related field. Prior workexperience in laboratory support or health related experience.

HTL (ASCP)certification or HTL (ASCP) eligible. If eligible must pass national certifyingexam within one year of employment.
