Data Analytics Statistician / Researcher

The Statistics & Data Analytics team at the Lubrizol Corporation has an opening for a solution-oriented Data Analytics Statistician / Researcher.

This position is located at our Hazelwood, Derbyshire site and is available to early career candidates including those currently studying and available to join in 2020-2021.

Your work will have a significant impact in helping us to facilitate innovation and improve efficiency by delivering data science systems and tools to the organization as well as providing statistical support to enable data-driven business decisions.

Role Overview :

We are seeking a Data Analytics Statistician like you, to join our Statistics & Data Analytics team. In this role you will have the opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of data analytics activities.

This includes researching and implementing advanced algorithms to enable the creation of predictive models and optimization methods.

In addition, you will consult with subject area experts on data and statistical matters. Work will be both self-directed and under the guidance of more senior statisticians.

Your ability to create high quality statistical models and to develop and implement advanced mathematical algorithms is critical, as is, strong interaction and communication skills.

The role will have a high level of autonomy, freedom to manage your own time, and the opportunity to collaborate with highly skilled teams and individuals including project managers, formulators, chemists, and engineers along with other data scientists and statisticians.

Performance Objectives :

Research and implement new statistical, machine learning and optimization approaches. You will contribute to the enhancement of our modeling approaches and analytics systems and tools which provide insightful information and enable our formulators and program managers to make timely, data-driven decisions.

Research areas may include feature selection, modeling approaches, transfer learning, nonlinear optimization, auto-updating models and more.

Create predictive models by mining complex data. In your role you will use advanced methods to dive into intricate chemical data and build operational empirical models that will be used by the business in product development and deployment efforts.

Collaborate and consult with data scientists and subject-area experts on statistics and data analytics problems. As a member of the Statistics & Data Analytics group, you will participate in diverse project work in partnership with other departments.

Your ability to communicate well will help to provide our customers, functional groups, and management team with meaningful insights from data.

Factors for Success :

  • PhD in statistics or closely related field
  • Method development expertise in advanced modeling or optimization
  • Experience implementing complex methods in R or Python
  • Ability to effectively use advanced algorithms to analyze complex data resulting in practical insights
  • Strong problem solving and deductive reasoning skills
  • Creativity and curiosity with the ability to learn and apply new concepts quickly
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of scientists and individuals
  • The Hazelwood site is located in a rural setting; around 8 miles from centre and supports our Customers and Original Equipment Manufacturers throughout Europe and Africa.

  • Derby is a historic town first settled by the Romans in around 80 AD. It is the site of the world’s first modern factory;
  • the Silk Mill built in 1717 and has been at the heart of the rail industry from 1839. Rolls Royce aero engines have been manufactured in Derby since 1914.

    Derby was awarded city status in 1977 and has recently undergone a £1 billion refurbishment to include a new shopping mall and media centre.
